Southern Rural Water’s online water-trading system is now open to customers in the Werribee and Bacchus Marsh irrigations districts.
The Southern Rural Water Exchange successfully trialled in 2023 to service customers in the Macalister Irrigation District, expanded to groundwater customers in 2025 and will now enable irrigation customers in the west to trade water more efficiently.
The online trade room provides an easier, more transparent way for buyers and sellers to trade water securely, which also helps to unlock more water for high value productive use.
General Manager Service Delivery, Rachel Lunn, said water trading is essential for agricultural operations.
“We are pleased to deliver this much-needed expansion for our customers, which will ensure a fair, transparent and dependable trading environment,” Rachel said.
“This expansion will provide more customers with opportunities to access trade rooms that operate 24/7.
“Customers follow a straightforward process and can expect a swift turnaround, as well as over-the-phone support during business hours.”
Ms Lunn said Southern Rural Water will host an in-person and virtual information session in February to help customers learn about the new trade rooms.
“During the sessions, customers will get hands-on experience with the platform and received personalised assistance,” she said
The new Werribee and Bacchus Marsh online trade room buying and selling process is safe and secure and users will be supported by Southern Rural Water and Water Partners through the trade process.
