Groundwater licence renewals for Hazelwood and Yallourn mines

Southern Rural Water is asking for public feedback on two groundwater licence renewal applications for the Hazelwood and Yallourn coal mines in the Latrobe Valley. These licences are required to keep the mines safe and stable in the short term while long-term rehabilitation plans are still being developed.

Engie Australia has applied to renew its existing licence at Hazelwood for five years. Energy Australia has applied to renew its licence at Yallourn for 15 years. Both licences are to support depressurisation and maintain safe conditions within the mine voids. They do not relate to mine filling, final closure activities, or the creation of pit lakes.

Southern Rural Water manages water licence applications under the Water Act 1989. These groundwater licence renewals are now open for public consultation following the completion of initial assessments and technical documentation.

Southern Rural Water reviews each application fairly, using expert advice and community feedback before making a decision. The consultation will remain open until 4pm Thursday, 7 August.

If a decision is not made before the current licences expire on Thursday, 31 August 2025, temporary licences may be put in place to ensure the mines remain safe and stable while the application process is finalised.
