Southern Rural Water continues to maintain normal water services, despite closing its offices to the public last week to reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

The majority of staff are now working remotely and following social distancing when site visits are necessary. Customers across southern Victoria can continue to reach all services by phone, email and online web chat as normal.

Board Chairman, Diane James AM and Managing Director, Cameron FitzGerald said that the organisation was well prepared, as the majority of staff were equipped to work remotely.

“Our priority has been to protect the health of our staff, our customers and our community, while we make sure we can continue to provide the essential services Victorians need, such as water for food production, power generation and the raw water for some urban water suppliers,” Ms James said.

On Friday, following a strengthening of Government guidance on social distancing, SRW closed public access to recreational facilities at its storages across the state, including: Lake Glenmaggie, Cowwarr Weir and Blue Rock Lake in the east and Pykes Creek, Merrimu and Melton Reservoirs in the west.

“This was a tough decision to take, but it was the right one to continue to play our part in helping to reduce the rate of transmission,” Mr FitzGerald said.

The majority of SRW office-based staff across the state are working from home, while providing the usual customer services including account support, licence applications, trades and water ordering. Field staff are travelling minimally, and maintaining strict social distancing when carrying out works on customers’ properties. All meetings are being held by phone or online conference and any community events have been postponed.

“I want to thank our customers for their understanding at this challenging time, and our people for their flexibility in adopting new ways of working to ensure our business – and those of our customers – are able to keep operating,” Ms James said.

Customers experiencing any financial difficulty are encouraged to contact SRW’s customer service team on 1300 139 510 or by email to discuss options for assistance. More information is available on
