Growers and farmers in the Bacchus Marsh and Werribee Irrigation Districts have the chance to secure more water this season.
Southern Rural Water (SRW) is auctioning 345ML of seasonal allocation this season, available to farmers in either district. Farmers must register on SRW’s Waterbid site to bid in the auctions. They can register at anytime, but must be logged in to make a bid.
The first auction will offer 10 lots ranging in size from 5ML to 50ML, with a total of 190ML. Bidding opens Tuesday 30 January 11am and continues through to closing at staggered times from 9:20am on Thursday 1 February.
Manager Water Supply West, Ed Smith, said that the available water comes from the conversion of a former water supply agreement that had been held in SRW’s name until the end of the year. “We decided to sell the allocation associated with those shares, to make it available for customers who might need more water this year,” Mr Smith said.
A further auction will be held later this season, at a date to be determined.
