Southern Rural Water will hold its fourth water share auction for the Macalister Irrigation Area, scheduled for Wednesday 26 February.

Manager Water Supply East, Terry Clapham, said there has already been stronger interest in this year’s auction than the previous two years, largely because of seasonal conditions.

“We already have some registrations submitted,” he said.

The water shares come from audited savings made from automation work in the district over the last few years that have been funded by Southern Rural Water.

A total of 559.9 ML of high reliability and 720.5 ML of low reliability water shares will go under the hammer. In a change from previous years, buyers will receive one low reliability water share for every high reliability share they purchase.

Water is sold in 50 ML parcels. Winning bidders can choose smaller amounts if they don’t want to purchase the entire parcel, even down to 1 ML.

The auction is open to everyone, but those interested in bidding must register by 25 February. Registration is free.

Terry said Southern Rural Water will hold information sessions for those interested on 11 February at the Southern Rural Water Maffra Office, 88 Johnson Street, Maffra, between 10am-1pm and 6-8pm. Anyone can drop in at any time between those hours.

“We strongly encourage anyone thinking about purchasing water to drop in to one of these sessions,” said Terry. “Whilst this water can only be used in the Macalister Irrigation Area, you don’t have to have land in the district to buy at the auction.

“We will have information kits and registration forms available, and people can ask any questions they might have.”

The auction will take place at the Maffra Recreational Reserve at 11am on Wednesday 26 February.
