Southern Rural Water is expecting strong interest in its auction of permanent water shares in the Macalister Irrigation District on Tuesday 7 February, at the Maffra Recreation Reserve.

The water shares have been made available through savings from automation works.

“This is a good opportunity for farmers to think about how to improve water supply for either increased productivity or providing security during dry times,” said Terry Clapham, Manager Water Supply East.

A total of 284.8 ML of high reliability and low reliability shares (bundled together) and 262.7 ML of high reliability water shares (without low reliability shares) will go under the hammer.

Potential buyers must register by 4pm on Friday 3 February to be able to bid for water. Registration forms can be downloaded from the SRW website or collected from reception. There is no charge to register and no obligation to bid.

“Buyers will be able to use the allocation that comes with purchased water shares – currently 100% – immediately after final payment is made.”

Terry also reminded potential buyers to check their annual use limit beforehand, as extra allocation may push their property over the allowable volume.

“You can check your annual use limits via your online water statement or by phoning our planners,” he said.

The auction will take place at the Maffra Recreation Reserve at 11am and potential bidders must bring their confirmation letter or email from 10.30am, to collect their bidding card.

Any water unsold after the auction will be offered at a shelf price via SRW’s website Watermatch.

Information packs and registration forms are available from Southern Rural Water’s Maffra office, online at, or by phoning 1300 139 510.
