Growers and farmers in the Bacchus Marsh and Werribee Irrigation Districts have a chance to secure some permanent water shares, which also comes with allocation for this season.
Southern Rural Water is holding an online auction of 230 ML high and 115ML low-reliability water shares, available to farmers in either district.
There will be 26 lots of 5ML(high)/2.5ML(low) and 5 lots of 20ML/10 ML auctioned from Tuesday 14 May 10:30am, closing at staggered times from 10:30am on Thursday 16 May. The split of the lots is as follows:
- 26 lots of 5ML of HRWS and 2.5ML LRWS
- 5 lots of 20ML of HRWS and 10ML LRWS.
Any allocation that has accrued to the water shares so far this season will also be transferred to the successful bidders.
Manager Water Supply West, Ed Smith, said that the available water comes from the conversion of an old water supply agreement that is no longer required.
“This is an opportunity for irrigators who feel they need to secure more water shares due to lower allocations or those that don’t have enough river water to shandy with their recycled water.” Mr Smith said.
All proceeds from the auction will be used to help close the gap in funding for the irrigation modernisation projects which are currently underway in both districts.
Farmers must register on SRW’s WaterBid site to bid in the auction. They can register at any time, but must be logged in to make a bid.
The auctions will close at 30min intervals on Thursday 16 May and bidders will be notified of the results at the close of the auction.
The Southern Rural Water team can help customers to register for the auction on WaterBid, but cannot assist individuals with the bidding process. Please call 1300 139 510 for more information.
