Southern Rural Water is appealing to visitors to Merrimu Reservoir to do the right thing after a huge spate of vandalism at its recreational reserve.
Repairing vandalised facilities is not normally part of the job description for a Southern Rural Water Storage Operator.
“We are seeing some extremely disgraceful behaviour by a minority who are spoiling Merrimu Reservoir’s recreational facilities for everyone else,” said General Manager Water Supply, John Tesoriero. “This type of constant vandalism is costing the organisation thousand of dollars each year.
“We appeal to anyone visiting Merrimu to report suspicious or hoon behaviour immediately to the local police or Crimestoppers,” he said. Vandals have broken fixtures in the park including fencing around the grassed and playground areas.
Due to the recent vandalism Merrimu Reservoir’s recreational area will be closed until 19 June 2010 for repairs.
Anyone caught damaging public property can face charges and may be forced to pay cleanup fees.
Crimestoppers can be contacted on 1800 333 000. For more information about Merrimu Reservoir’s recreational facilities, phone Southern Rural Water on 1300 139 510 or visit www.srw.com.au. ENDS.
