| Landholders with domestic and stock bores will have an opportunity to participate in a new study into groundwater being conducted by Southern Rural Water.
Southern Rural Water (SRW) wants to improve how groundwater is managed by working with customers and communities to gain a better understanding of water use and water issues such as quality and accessibility.
Mick Fennessy from SRW’s Warrnambool office said the Corporation is looking for feedback from groundwater users in the Condah and Glenelg Water Supply Protection Areas (WSPAs).
“This is a key opportunity for landholders to have their say about groundwater, and what it means to their property.
"We are particularly interested in domestic and stock water bores, including how many are on the property, what the water is used for and the quality of the water.
“We have already surveyed licence holders and now we are interested in hearing from people with domestic and stock bores who have not had their views heard before.
"We are also keen to find out whether people have difficulty accessing water and any other issues they might have."
Portland Shire Mayor Cr. Gilbert Wilson said the new study would yield valuable information to help local landholders.
"Water is vital for our community, and groundwater is one of those things we just don’t know enough about. This survey will help to identify where the bores are located in our region and any of the issues that locals are having with their groundwater. “I urge landholders to participate so that we can ensure our local region is represented fully. The more we know about water in the Shire the better. This information can only benefit us going into the future.”
Groundwater users should expect to receive a short survey in the mail within the next few weeks.
If you live within the WSPAs of Condah and Glenelg and want to take part but have not received a survey in the mail, please contact Southern Rural Water. For further details about the survey please contact Penny Winbanks at SRW on 1300 139 510.
