| Southern Rural Water says a leaking bore at Warrnambool has now been brought under control.
Manager Groundwater and Rivers, Craig Parker, said the Sebel Deep Blue Resort in Warrnambool has a licence to use water from the bore for the resort’s spa complex and heating.
The bore has sustained damage below the surface, between 2 and 20 metres deep, and was leaking between half and one megalitre per day.
Craig said that Southern Rural Water issued the owner with a notice under Section 78 of the Water Act 1989, requiring them to obtain immediate approval for appropriate discharge of the leaking water, to stop the flow of water from the bore as soon as possible, and to provide a plan for the long-term management of the bore.
“Southern Rural Water, the owner and a number of agencies worked closely together to ensure a speedy resolution to the leaking bore.” said Craig. “An inflatable “packer” was lowered into the bore deeper than the leak and inflated with air.
“We also worked hard to minimise any harm to the environment from the leaked water.”
Craig said Southern Rural Water will continue to closely monitor the site until permanent repairs can be made. “The leak has been stopped and the immediate risk is over. We will continue to work with the owner to ensure the permanent repairs are made in a reasonable time.”
