| Southern Rural Water is asking landowners in bushfire affected areas to double check with the corporation before building or altering property dams.
Manager Groundwater and Rivers, Craig Parker, said there is an understandable interest in dams after the fires, particularly for fire protection purposes.
“All we ask is that people check with us first to make sure they are following the right rules and regulations,” he said.
“We are more than happy to have a chat with people and, if necessary, one of our field officers can come out to offer advice.”
Different dam licences are required for different circumstances. Dam construction licences are required for any dam on a waterway (including natural channels or catchments of 60 hectares or greater), and many larger dams also require a construction licence. Most of these dams will also require an Operating Licence once they are constructed.
Water use may also require a separate licence. If you are planning to use your dam water for irrigation or commercial purposes, you will need a Surface Water Licence.
Generally, if your dam is only used for domestic and stock purposes (including firefighting), you will not need a licence – but landowners are always advised to check with Southern Rural Water first.
