Southern Rural Water has announced that Macalister irrigators will receive an extra 5% allocation, taking them to 95% of their high reliability water shares.

Acting Manager Water Supply East, Gavin Prior, said that some flows into Lake Glenmaggie over the last couple of weeks have allowed the increase.

“Cooler days have also meant less evapotranspiration rates on farms, meaning a little less demand for water,” he said.

“We know that farmers in the Macalister Irrigation District have been doing it very tough. This time last year, the district had 100% high reliability and 5% low reliability allocation.

“However, we’ve had a very dry summer with very little flows into Lake Glenmaggie. We want to assure farmers that any further flows into Lake Glenmaggie will go toward increasing their high reliability allocation.”

Gavin said that as the end of the season draws closer, Southern Rural Water needs to maximise delivery efficiency, and may have to move customer orders to maintain consistent flows in areas.

“This will minimise how much we lose in the channels, and could make further allocations of water possible,” he said.

He said Southern Rural Water would continue to closely monitor the situation, and review allocation every fortnight throughout the season.

Gavin again urged anyone in the district who will not use their water this season to consider trading, even this late in the season.

“It’s extremely critical now that water that may not be used this season is traded,” he said. “There are people who desperately need that water to finish off their season.”
